The Cyanotype Process:
Cyanotype printing is a photographic printing process that dates back to the 19th century. It uses a completly safe solution containing chemicals called ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. When these chemicals are mixed together, they become sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light.
To create a cyanotype print, you start with a light-sensitive paper or fabric. You can place objects, negatives, or even digital designs onto the paper or fabric. Then, you expose it to sunlight or use UV light to activate the chemical reaction.
The UV light causes the chemicals to react, turning the exposed areas a vibrant blue color (known as cyan) while the unexposed areas remain white. After exposure, the print is rinsed in water to stop the chemical reaction and fix the image.
Cyanotype prints are known for their distinctive blue color and a vintage aesthetic. They offer a unique and artistic way to create prints with a rich, blueprint-like appearance. The process allows for a range of creative possibilities, whether it's printing photographs, botanical specimens, or custom designs.
